At times funny and heartbreaking, the whole
family will enjoy this charming musical adventure.
Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre’s musical selection, Oliver!, based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, opens tonight. With Book, Music, and Lyrics by Lionel Bart, it was an instant hit when it opened in the West End in London in 1960, and later on Broadway in 1963, where it won three Tony Awards. AST’s production is brought to life by New York-based director/choreographer DJ Salisbury, leading a company of over 50, including our young company of pickpockets and orphans. The show had a “sneak preview” last night, and its infectious energy and elegant artistry had the audience on its feet.
Oliver! is a great show to enjoy with your family, and it features several local youth in key roles, including Little Rock’s Cross Brandon as the Artful Dodger, and eight-year-old Simon Marotte of Conway in the title role of Oliver.
It’s also not too late to catch Much Ado About Nothing at The Village at Hendrix, playing this weekend on Friday and Sunday at 7:30. And mark your calendars for the arrival of King Lear on June 20th–like last year’s Richard III, King Lear will take advantage of intimate on-stage seating, which also means seats are limited! Be sure to get yours today! Finally, our one-hour children’s adaptation of Midsummer opens June 26th. Things are moving fast in Conway–don’t miss out on any of the fun!
